Hugo Dyson (1896-1975) was a British mathematician, philosopher, and literary critic. He is best known for his association with the Inklings, a group of literary figures that included J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis.
Dyson studied mathematics at Cambridge University and went on to teach at several universities, including Birmingham and Oxford. He was known for his work in algebraic topology and contributed to the development of Morse theory.
In addition to his mathematical work, Dyson was also interested in literature and philosophy. He was a friend and mentor to many of the Inklings and played a key role in the formation of their group. Dyson was known for his wit and humor, and was a popular figure among his peers.
Later in life, Dyson became interested in the philosophy of religion and published several works on the subject. He was also a vocal critic of organized religion and its role in society. Dyson died in 1975 at the age of 79.
